Children's Book

Amethyst partnered with Children Writing For Children to help Amethyst children write a book about addiction. The book is titled "When Mommy Drinks Drugs". This book helps children living with addiction in their families recognize that they are not alone and that they can turn to caring adults for help and reassurance. Sometimes a child's words can reach another child in a way that words from an adult cannot.

The book acts as a teaching tool for any educator, counselor, parent or person who is concerned about the well-being of a child who is at risk. The book helps facilitate discussions around such issues as:

• living in an alcohol and drug treatment program
• living with a parent who is in recovery
• living in a single parent home
• living in a foster home
• reunification of the family
• prevention of the cycle of alcohol and drug addiction, depression and guilt
• recognizing the socio-economic differences between peers
